Shaping the future of devices in museums: knight invests $750,000 in 4.5 experiments with immersive equipment in the arts

From an illusion experience that pairs viewers with beautiful ladies from the african diaspora, to the design of a new free source code that transforms collection data into interactive experiences, projects are focused on wearing immersive technologies such as virtual, augmented and mixed reality to increase audience engagement.

"Art institutions everywhere are eager to improve the use of to contact users. But limited technology and venues hinder experimentation and success," said chris barr, director of arts and technology at the knight foundation. "We are confident that new initiatives like these will spur on the latest new technologies in the field and will last the full length of these companies seeking to engage users in culture through technology."

Five projects listed below , were selected through an open idea call process announced earlier this year with over 500 submissions.

In addition to funding from knight, organizations will receive additional coaching from microsoft's mixed reality team, getting microsoft and related technologies, and even a chance to be featured in microsoft's marketing channels. Representatives from selected organizations travel to redmond, wa to gather and learn from microsoft teams focused on multiple platforms and devices, from microsoft hololens two to azure kinect and altspacevr.

"The selected institutions, with new support from knight, are exploring and blazing a new era of creativity to help humanity transcend the physical and digital, memory and imagination, the clock and space, science and art."

American museum of natural history (us$175,000)explore how immersive methodologies and documentation acquisition can combine to provide museum audiences with more context for objects on display: museum develop workflows and a software client with free source code to transform these collections into an interactive experience; experiment with how the software is able to function virtual reality and other immersive techniques and provide recommendations to cultural institutions that would implement similar prospects for an influx of visitors. 000 usd)create a girl to co-create online museums, and wirt to expand and engage audiences: organizations will collaborate to power an expanded augmented reality virtual museum that combines a dynamic group of artists, educators and technologists with ordinary ladies from the african diaspora . The program will create a series of real and computer-generated exhibitions around the world, using the power of immersive interactive skills to bring viewers into the life experiences of women and girls from the african diaspora.San jose japanese american museum ($100,000 )to use augmented reality and art, strengthening the museum's links with our community. - Ethnic historical figures and history of japantown san jose.Museum of excellence and complexity at miami-dade high school (moad) ($120k)to develop skills and craftsmanship to explore the intersection of art, social justice and immersive materials daily through forensic architecture: true to scale - the first exhibition dedicated to immersive technologies - moad will create a training center; experimental ongoing curricula and hone a tactical plan for the forward-thinking critical and creative incorporation of immersive devices into museum programming, exhibits, and outreach opportunities.
