Britain has been told to brace for a sweltering heatwave this week as a Level 3 Heat Health Alert has come into effect from BBC World News Today - as the Met Office issues an amber warning for parts of England and Wales.
A double heat warning has been put in place by experts amid increasing heatwave temperatures that are set to soar this week, with London's mercury set to reach 32C (90F) by the weekend, while Rochester, Kent will see highs of 30C (86F) and Portsmouth will reach a balmy 25C (77F).
The UK Health Security Agency's warning, which covers all regions in England, began at midday and will end at 11pm on Sunday with impacts possible to health, transport and infrastructure.
And the Met Office's extreme heat warning, which covers much of the southern half of England as well as parts of eastern Wales, will be in force from Thursday through until the end of Sunday.
There is also an increased risk of water accidents and fires as more people visit coasts and beauty spots, the Met Office warned. The heat will build through the week, peaking on Friday and Saturday thanks to the influence of high pressure positioned over the UK.
Experts announced a Level 3 Heat Health Alert will come into effect today - with little rain expected to help relieve the threat of drought which has prompted hosepipe bans and fire warnings - and have extended it until Sunday.
Families enjoying the summer holidays are set for sizzling heat on Tuesday as temperatures are expected to reach 29C (84F) in the capital, while forecasters predict the mercury will reach 28C (82F) in Southampton and a balmy 26C (79F) in Exeter.
The said temperatures are likely to rise into the low to mid-30s in central and southern parts of the UK later by Thursday - but will not be as extreme as the record-breaking heat in July when the thermometer climbed above 40C.
